The Hiccupotamus

Zenz, A. (2009). The hiccupotamus. New York, NY: Marshall Cavendish Children.

Format: Soft Cover
Age: 3+

The Hiccupotamus tells the story of a hippo who has the hiccups. His friends try all sorts of ways to get rid of them until they are finally gone, but then all of his friends get the hiccups. Zenz writes in a fun nonsensical way in that he just adds the right ending to words to make them rhyme. For example, "One day he saw an elephant. With cakes of green and yellowphant." This makes it really fun to listen to. The watercolor paintings that accompany the story are really visually appealing. The sky in the background changes colors from blue to purple to orange to yellow.  The plants around them change as well. This book would be great to read to a preschool or toddler class.
