The Little Engine that Could

Piper, W. (1990). The little engine that could. New York, NY: Platt & Munk.

Format: Soft Cover
Age: 4+

This classic book tells the story of a train full of toys and food being pulled over the mountain for the good children on the other side. The train breaks down on the way up the mountain and the toys stop many different types of engines to ask for help. Each engine says that they were not made to help them get over the mountain. Finally, a small engine comes and says that although she has never been over the mountain, she would try to help them get over the mountain. On the way over the mountain the little engine chants, "I think I can, I think I can." This book is great for older children due to the length of the story. It is good for story time because children will get involved with chanting along with the little engine. The images and descriptions of all the toys and foods are very interesting look at and will entertain the children.
