We're Going on a Bear Hunt

Rosen, M., & Oxenbury, H. (1989). We're going on a bear hunt. New York: Margaret K. McElderry Books.

Recommended Age: 4+
Format: Softcover

This story chronicles a journey by a father and his children as they embark on a bear hunt. The rhythmic, repetitive language is perfect for young children. Throughout their journey they encounter different obstacles like grass, a river or mud. From there they need to decided whether they should go under, over or through the obstacle. This is perfect for helping young children understand the concept of these words. At the end of the book they find the bear and make a hasty return journey encounter the same obstacles. This is a fun book to read for singular story time, or group story time. There is a lot of room for interaction between the child and the book. Children will pick up on the cadence and wording of this book. They will also enjoy being consulted to figure out how to get around an obstacle. The images are visually pleasing and fun to look at as well. The images change between black and white and color and this keeps an interest in the book as not image looks immensely similar.
