The Poky Little Puppy

Lowrey, J. S., & Tenggren, G. (1997). The poky little puppy. New York, NY: Golden Book.
Format: Hard Cover
Age: 3+

The Poky Little Puppy tells the story of 5 puppies who dig a hole under their fence and go out for a walk. When they get out they cannot find that poky puppy, they find him and he tells them he smells dessert and they all run home. When they get home they get in trouble for digging a hole under the fence and are sent to bed without dessert. Except the poky little puppy is the last one home and eats it all up. This happens again the next day. Finally, they are out and the poky puppy smells strawberry shortcake. They are sent to bed again without dinner, but they get up and fill their hole. Their mother gives them the dessert, and the poky little puppy who has been locked out by them filling the hole does not get any. This is a cute story and suitable for 3 year olds and older. Although most pages do not have much text there are a few pages with a lot of text and overall it is a long story for kids under 3 to sit through. The illustrations in the book just show a puppy or a bug not too much background illustrations. The illustrations are beautiful to look at though and the puppies are easy to find adorable.
