Metzger, S., & Ho, J. (2007). The mixed-up alphabet. New York, NY: Scholastic.
Format: Soft Cover
Age: 3+
This book tells the story of the alphabet lined up in a classroom. They decide that they do not want to be in the order they are in any longer, and they decided to switch places, except 'Y' which stays where it is. Z is at the beginning, 'L,M,N,O,P' split up, and 'O' and 'K' move together. They fall asleep in their new order, the next morning they realize that the children in their class love singing the alphabet song and they won't know what to do if the letters are not in the right order. The letters rush to return to their original spots in time for the children to arrive. This book would be fun to read at story time as most kids know their alphabet or recognize a few letters by the age of 2 or 3. The letters in this book have faces and arms and legs, as well as being covered in different patterns. This makes them fun to look at. The book ends with the kids singing the ABC song which could be included in story time as well. Overall, it is a fun book, and fun for kids to imagine the alphabet in a different order.
