The Littlest Pumpkin

Herman, R. A., & Ogden, B. (2001). The littlest pumpkin. New York, NY: Scholastic.Recommended Age: 3+
Format: Soft cover

This book follows the littlest pumpkin at a pumpkin stand on Halloween. She wants to be chosen by someone and made into a jack-o-lantern. She waits patiently as all the other pumpkins are chosen continuing to wish to become a jack-o-lantern. As the night approaches there are four pumpkins left a bruised one, a lumpy one, one without a stem and the littlest pumpkin. The other three are chosen and the littlest pumpkin thinks that his Halloween dreams are lost until he is made a jack-o-lantern at a Halloween party for mice. This is a great book to read to kids around Halloween. It has a plot and there are a few long sentences so it is more appropriate for children who can sit and pay attention starting around 3.
